Manchester City pinpointed Florian Wirtz as one of the players who could save their season, yet in another devastating blow to Pep Guardiola’s team, the Germany international playmaker is set to extend his contract with Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen.

City’s struggles continued on Sunday as they were the victims of a 2-1 derby loss against Manchester United, meaning that they have won only one of their last 11 matches across all competitions.

Guardiola’s men are set to take the unprecedented step of delving into the January transfer market to significantly improve their squad, with Wirtz one of the players that the defending Premier League champions were targeting.

In a further blow to City’s aspirations of getting back to their best, though, Leverkusen are set to shut down that prospect rapidly.

Kicker reports that B04 are doing everything they can to extend Wirtz’s contract, which expires in 2027, so he can spend at least one more year with the club.

“Almost all the signs point to this happening,” the German source reports.

Often linked with Bayern Munich or Manchester City, Wirtz has an asking price of €150 million plus salary demands in the region of €20m per year – figures large enough to at least put the Bundesliga leaders off.

Leverkusen can fund his salary off the back of their run in the Champions League, which has already secured around €66m in revenue for the German champions, while the 21-year-old is also satisfied with a lower wage at his current club.

Florian Wirtz: The total package

Wirtz has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €96.8m, with his excellent numbers this season backing up this career-high figure for the rising star.

He has 11 goals and five assists across all competition for Leverkusen this season and has notably shone in his first Champions League campaign, scoring five in six.

Kicker describes him as a “total package of footballing genius and hard-working mentality”, which is why he is so highly rated by Man City and Guardiola.
