Amorim has work cut out after Man Utd hit new low against Bournemouth

Manchester United suffered another chastening defeat on Sunday.

After crashing out of the Carabao Cup against Tottenham, Ruben Amorim's Red Devils hosted Bournemouth at Old Trafford. At this point, it is no secret that the Cherries are one of the best-coached teams in the Premier League.

However, Man Utd seemingly didn't get the memo as their poor run of form continued. Bournemouth ultimately ran out 3-0 victors on their opponents' home soil for the second season running.

Man City are seemingly the only 'big six' side currently on a worse run of form than Man Utd, who have only managed to beat Pep Guardiola's men and Viktoria Plzen over the past six games.

Man Utd actually ended the Bournemouth game with significantly more Expected Goals than their counterparts, but it mattered little as the club's same old shortcomings came to the fore, while Marcus Rashford was dropped for the third consecutive game.

Man Utd still stuck in a rut

Man Utd once more struggled to adequately defend set pieces defensively, while failing to convert their own chances in the attack. Although they managed to put pressure on Andoni Iraola's players, it ultimately yielded no tangible results.

Bournemouth are an excellent example of a well-run club that does not panic when things go wrong and who trust in their own project and ideas. Man Utd are the exact opposite, as the recent 'mutual' exit of Dan Ashworth illustrates.

For the first time since 1989, Man Utd will be stuck in the bottom half of the table at Christmas and although there are still games in 2024, it is a fitting end to a year that has mostly been a disaster for the Red Devils.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have yet to show that they can actually affect any real change and Ruben Amorim will have his work cut out to get this underperforming team back into Europe between now and the end of the season.
