Manchester United are desperately trying to sell Marcus Rashford in order to protect their two “crown jewels” of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

The Red Devils have spent lavishly in recent seasons but have enjoyed little return on their spending, with big-money flops like Antony and Mason Mount putting pressure on the club in terms of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

This is forcing Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Man Utd board into some difficult decisions, according to the Daily Mail, which indicates that one option they have in order to play their way out of this situation is to sell Mainoo or Garnacho.

Offloading one of their “crown jewels” is something that the Red Devils want to avoid, and instead they have formed another plan to sell Rashford on a cut-price deal.

It is claimed that the 27-year-old has been put on the transfer market for just €48 million (£40m) – more than half of what Man Utd to sell the attacker just a couple of year ago.

The report indicates that a deal is unlikely. United don’t believe any offers for Rashford will be forthcoming, in part because he commands an astronomical wage of €425,000 (£325,000) per week.

As such, the possibility that Garnacho or Mainoo is sold has not been taken off the board by Man Utd in what would be a deeply damaging blow to the club’s reputation.

Fabrizio Romano on Marcus Rashford’s future

Football transfer news reporter Fabrizio Romano says that Rashford has not been told that he could be sold in the January transfer window.

Speaking via his YouTube channel, he said: “In general, Man Utd could make many changes in the squad in 2025. At the moment, for Rashford, they’ve not told anything to the player. He’s not aware of any plan to sell him, there’s no formal communication. But Man Utd could make many changes next year.

“For Rashford, it’s quiet next year. He wants to fight for his place and is still obsessed with the chance to make it at Man Utd and there are no negotiations.”

With no move looming for Rashford, this spells trouble for the Red Devils and mean that the futures of Garnacho and Mainoo are not as secure as the club would expect.
