Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has backed Robert Sanchez, despite his error during Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.

The 27-year-old dropped a Matheus Cunha corner in first-half stoppage time at Stamford Bridge, which allowed Matt Doherty to poke home an undeserved equaliser for Wolves.

Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke both netted second-half goals to secure all three points for Chelsea, and spare Sanchez’s blushes, but Blues fans have urged for the ex-Brighton & Hove Albion ‘keeper to be replaced in 2025.

The Spaniard has now made four errors leading directly to a goal so far this season, with Ipswich Town’s Arijanet Muric (five) the only Premier League goalkeeper to have registered more this term.

However, Maresca has fiercely defended Sanchez, despite calls for him to be dropped from Chelsea’s starting XI.

“You said fourth mistake? And how many times did he save us? I think more than four, so it happens, no problem,” Maresca told Sky Sports following Chelsea’s 3-1 win against Wolves.

“It happens. Mistakes happen to him, the strikers, the central defenders. No problem. Robert is doing well.”

Sanchez fell out of favour under Mauricio Pochettino last season, with Djordje Petrovic displacing him at Stamford Bridge, but he has started 20 of Chelsea’s 22 league matches so far this campaign following the appointment of Maresca.

However, his distribution has caused Chelsea a number of problems this year and several supporters are desperate to see Filip Jorgensen given a chance to displace Sanchez in 2025.

As a result, Maresca’s complete faith in the Spain international will cause yet more angst amongst the Chelsea fanbase.
