Chelsea are set for a free run at Alejandro Garnacho as Napoli are going all in on alternative target Karim Adeyemi, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer saga surrounding the Manchester United winger continues. Garnacho started for the Red Devils against Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, but he could yet depart Old Trafford before the January window slams shut on February 3.

The Argentina international has been heavily linked with Chelsea and Napoli over the past week or two. Man Utd are open to reluctantly cashing in on the youngster due to their worrying Profit and Sustainability situation.

Chelsea are looking for a replacement for Mykhailo Mudryk, who has been provisionally suspended for failing a drugs test, while Napoli are seeking their next Khvicha Kvaratskhelia following the Georgian's €70 million transfer to PSG.

However, with Man Utd steadfastly demanding a fee similar to Kvaratskhelia's, Napoli are putting all their eggs in a different basket.

Napoli close to Adeyemi agreement

In recent days, the Serie A giants have stepped up their pursuit of alternative target Karim Adeyemi of Borussia Dortmund. In fact, such has been their determination that Fabrizio Romano is now reporting that they are close to reaching a 'full agreement.'

German media claimed on Thursday that Napoli would be willing to go as high as €52m for the Germany international, but it appears that this won't be necessary. Romano states that a fee in the region of €40m will be enough to strike a deal.

However, with both clubs in action on Saturday, final talks will resume on Sunday and there may yet be one major hurdle. So far, Adeyemi has shown no inclination to depart Dortmund mid-season, which means that it could still take some convincing before any transfer is imminent.

Still, the news of both clubs being on the verge of striking a full agreement will be music to Chelsea's ears. The Blues have enquired several times about Garnacho in recent times and are preparing a new approach.

It is not guaranteed that Chelsea will push to sign the 20-year-old, especially for a whopping €70m, but they will try to test Man Utd's resolve - and it appears as though they will have a free turn at Garnacho.
