Everton have been told to be careful what they wish for as Jose Mourinho is rumoured to be lined up to replace Sean Dyche at the Goodison Park club.

The Toffees find themselves 16th in the Premier League table, just one point clear of the drop zone albeit with a game in hand against rivals Liverpool to come.

They have won just three matches this season and have been dour to watch, with their tally of 15 goals scored the poorest in the league by some distance except bottom side Southampton.

Dyche is coming under increasing pressure, with Everton reportedly sounding out Graham Potter as a replacement before he was appointed by West Ham United.

Now attention has turned to Fenerbahce boss Mourinho has a potential saviour, but Everton have been warned that the former Manchester United and Chelsea boss would not necessarily be an upgrade to what they have.

“I just don't see how Mourinho does as any differently to Sean Dyche. I don't see any difference in that. He's a massive name in football but I'd be careful with that one,” former Arsenal and England star Paul Merson told Sky Sports.

“They're not scoring a lot of goals but it's not like Mourinho is going to come in and they're going to be free-flowing.

“He had the best Chelsea team of all time and they weren't free-flowing. Winning 1-0, 2-0 every week, never letting in a goal, but Dyche doesn't let in too many goals either. It's a strange one for me. I think it's the owners wanting a massive football name.”

Merson does not think the situation that Dyche and Everton find themselves in is as desperate as being portrayed.

He added: “I have a lot of respect for Dyche because he does it his way and doesn't listen to the crowd or think he's got to go gung-ho. He says: ‘this is my team and we'll be hard to beat’

“They played three of the biggest teams in the country in Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City and drew three games. But then in the next minute, they go and they lose at home to Nottingham Forest and then Bournemouth. Instead of being three undefeated, it becomes four and five without a win.”

Next up for Everton is a home clash against Peterborough in the FA Cup, a match that really could see the end of Dyche if it ends in a negative result for the Toffees, paving the way for Mourinho to potentially take charge against Aston Villa or Tottenham in the Premier League on 15 and 19 January respectively.
