Manchester United have received more worrying news regarding the future of Kobbie Mainoo, who suddenly finds himself in the eye of a January transfer window storm.

Article continues under the video

Mainoo seemed to be set for a long career at Old Trafford having exploded into the first team last season, yet it has since been revealed that no one leaving Man Utd is off the board – and that includes the talented 19-year-old England international.

Ineos boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe is prepared to listen to offers for any player, with academy products like Mainoo and Marcus Rashford especially vulnerable as the Red Devils seek to improve their position relative to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

As David Ornstein points out, these players can be sold for “pure profit” and are therefore especially attractive for club owners to sell.

Chelsea are waiting in the wings to profit in what would be one of the most remarkable transfers in recent seasons should United prove open to selling Mainoo.

Contract talks in difficulty

Mainoo’s contract negotiations are proving to be complicated, which further pushes him towards the Man Utd exit.

The Manchester Evening News reports that he is seeking a salary of around €240,000 (£200,000) per week in order to extend his stay with Ruben Amorim’s side.

Although his deal expires in 2027 with the option of an additional year on the club’s side, gives United some breathing space, there is a fear that Mainoo could still be driven out of the club in the months ahead.

He has struggled to regain the peak form that he showed last season, having competed at Euro 2024 with England, and while he did impress against Liverpool at the weekend, the MEN stresses that PSR could “force” the Red Devils into some tough decisions regarding their academy stars.

Former Man Utd sporting director Dan Ashworth hinted in September that moves could be afoot when he said the era of the one-club player was over.

“I've seen this written before, I'm not saying anything new,” he explained.

“The number of players that will be one-club players there for a long, long period of time, I think it's probably changing within the game and that's an unintended consequence of the rules and regulations.”

Mainoo and Man Utd could be the latest victims of this phenomenon.
