Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has recently signed a lucrative new contract with the Premier League champions, but while things are going smoothly for the Norway international on the field, away from it, he has seen a huge investment in a vaccine company falter.

Haaland poured a reported €1 million into Nykode Therapeutics in February 2024 via his investment company Pillage 3, yet the company, which focuses on cancer treatment, has endured a terrible year that has seen its worth plummet, according to Nettavisen.

In November, a key deal with Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche, which was worth over €500m in 2020, collapsed, leading to a dramatic decline in the value of the company’s shares.

The catalyst for this was Nykode stopping a study that was crucial to their hopes of having a cervical cancer vaccine approved. This came about because the timeframe of the study was going to have to be expanded.

Now around half the company’s employees will be laid off, while the share price has collapsed over the course of a year.

Having been worth €1.63 per share in January 2024, it is now worth just €0.18 – an incredible reduction of 89%.

It is not known how much Haaland’s investment company holds currently, the Norwegian source states, yet his initial €1m investment would now be worth under €100,000.

Haaland’s investment a drop in the ocean

Haaland’s new Manchester City contract will ensure that this blow is not too significant a problem for the 24-year-old striker.

It is estimated that he is being paid around €600,000 per week by Pep Guardiola’s side, while he also has the security of a deal that stretches until 2034. He has, therefore, effectively committed his entire career to the Etihad Stadium outfit.

The Man City striker may be going through a frustrating spell on the field by his high standards, yet with 17 goals for the season, he sits second in both the Premier League top scorer and European Golden Shoe standings, trailing only Mo Salah.
