Manchester United want to bring England international midfielder Angel Gomes back to the club after he departed Old Trafford for Lille as a free agent in 2020.

Angel could make the reverse journey this summer because, along with Lille team-mate Jonathan David, both find themselves out of contract in June.

The 24-year-old has shone in France to such an extent that he earned a first England cap, although in recent weeks he has not featured as he is in the process of recovering from a calf injury that has restricted him to 16 appearances this season.

While Lille would love to retain the player, he looks destined to return to the Premier League – but not necessarily Old Trafford.

Gomes has decided that he would prefer to hook up with Tottenham than move to Ruben Amorim’s United or indeed Graham Potter’s West Ham, another club that has expressed an interest in him, GiveMeSport reports.

When speaking about United previously, Angel has always been very respectful of the club.

“Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it’s home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future,” he told L’Equipe in 2024.

Who wants to sign Angel Gomes?

West Ham have acted quickly to offer Angel a pre-contract agreement, but terms have not yet been agreed.

Spurs are putting together an offer while United have been slower to act, GMS reports, opening the door for Ange Postecoglou’s side to win the race for the player.

Lurking in the background are Newcastle and Aston Villa, both of whom have long admired the creative midfielder.

In addition, interest comes from Bundesliga side Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, making the competition fierce for Angel Gomes.
