Manchester United are in permanent contact with Barcelona over Andreas Christensen, according to Spanish media.

The Red Devils are desperate for January reinforcements but know that they are highly unlikely to secure their top targets this month. Profit and Sustainability concerns are hamstringing Man Utd in the market and they will have to sell before they can buy.

Midfielders Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are expected to leave Old Trafford this year - and perhaps this month - which means that Man Utd will have to bring in midfielders.

Former Denmark international Per Frimann believes that Man Utd should replace Casemiro with Sporting CP's Morten Hjulmand, whom Ruben Amorim once described as more 'complete' than Manuel Ugarte, but his €80 million release clause makes a deal unlikely.

The Manchester club's lack of funds means that they will have to go bargain hunting and, if they can't land Hjulmand, they may have to bring in a cheaper compatriot.

Man Utd want Christensen

According to Sport, Man Utd have been in constant contact with Barcelona over Andreas Christensen despite the fact that the former Chelsea man has been injured for almost the entirety of the campaign.

Barcelona are understood to be open to offloading Christensen this year and this has piqued the interest of Man Utd, with the Dane previously showing himself to be a very reliable option at both centre-back and defensive midfield.

Man Utd hold a long-standing interest in the 28-year-old and Barcelona are willing to negotiate after their decision to keep Ronald Araujo and even agreeing new contract terms with the Uruguay international.

Nothing is advanced but Man Utd have formally enquired about Christensen and are monitoring the situation as Barcelona intend to shed weight in the defensive department by selling either the Dane or Eric Garcia.
