Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho may no longer be 'untouchable' at Manchester United, according to David Ornstein.

The Red Devils have endured a nightmare campaign and a major reckoning is set to take place in the coming months. Ruben Amorim and INEOS are planning a massive squad overhaul that will see players deemed not good enough depart Man Utd regardless of their reputation.

Marcus Rashford is an obvious candidate to leave and Fabrizio Romano has on Monday reiterated that the 27-year-old megastar could move as early as January if the right offer comes in.

In fact, very few players at Old Trafford could be spared the axe this year and The Athletic journalist David Ornstein suggests that even players previously thought 'untouchable' could be sacrificed.

Man Utd could cash in on Mainoo, Garnacho

Speaking to NBC Sports ahead of Man Utd's clash with Liverpool, Ornstein stated that only sales of players like Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo are completely out of the question whereas even the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho could be sold to raise much-needed 'pure profit.'

“If a departure is going to happen [for Rashford], a sale in particular, maybe it’s more likely in the summer, but it would represent pure profit - something we hear about so much - because he was an academy graduate," Ornstein said.

“In the same way that Kobbie Mainoo might be, he’s out of contract in 2027 – no news on a new deal. Alejandro Garnacho too, I don’t think anybody in that bracket is off the table. Who is, is somebody like Leny Yoro, like Amad Diallo – I think they are untouchable."

This is a concerning update for Man Utd supporters who would hate to lose promising academy graduates like Mainoo and Garnacho. Both were such important pieces last season but have struggled this term, with Mainoo in particular still lacking match sharpness as was evident in some moments against Liverpool.
