Mendes, 22, has entered the final 18 months of his current PSG contract. The Portugal international has been a regular starter for the Parisians since his initial €45 million move - a price tag that was considered significant for such a young player at the time.

With a contract expiring in summer 2026, the club are attempting to tie Mendes down to a new deal but are facing difficulties over the renewal.

The Transfers Podcast understands that PSG have been informed by the player’s agent that he wants an annual salary of over €10m net in order to prolong his stay at Parc des Princes.

And Man Utd are keeping a close eye on developments in the French capital and could attempt to execute a transfer next summer.

Man Utd want Nuno Mendes

The English champions boast some advantages in their pursuit of Mendes.

Ruben Amorim is the coach who first promoted Mendes to the Sporting first team back in 2020 after youth football in Portugal was curtailed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He made his debut in June 2020, going on to play 47 times under Amorim before earning his move to PSG.

Amorim’s preferred style of play relies heavily on attacking wing-backs but the 39-year-old has been unable to implement his system optimally at Old Trafford due to the personnel at his disposal.

He has been using compatriot Diogo Dalot as a makeshift option in the injury-enforced absences of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Shaw has missed at least 53 days through injury in all but one of his 11 seasons at Old Trafford.

Nuno shares a connection with Bruno Fernandes as they are handled by the same agency, which recently amalgamated with Amorim's representation.

That connection is something PSG are concerned about.

"They have not received any offer from Manchester United at this stage,” Duncan Castles tells The Transfers Podcast.

“No discussions between the clubs, but they're well aware of the interest. They will continue to try and negotiate a new deal with Mendes, and they know it's in their favour that Manchester United are highly unlikely to play Champions League football next year.

“From both sides, I'm told it's unlikely there will be a move this window, but there's a lot of pressure on PSG from Mendes' side to increase that salary offer and convince him he should remain at the club."
