Man Utd are set to strengthen their squad in the coming transfer window.

Ruben Amorim has endured a shaky start to life as Man Utd boss but the Portuguese coach is determined to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.

And one deal in particular will see his side challenge rivals Arsenal in the transfer market as Man Utd go after Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, according to a report in the Daily Star.

Arsenal have coveted the Cameroon international for a while without ever making a move, and now Ruben Amorim is on the scene and supposedly a big fan.

Man Utd are weighing up a £40m move for Mbeumo, who joined Brentford for just £5.8m in 2019 and has really blossomed under Thomas Frank.

The move makes sense for Man Utd, given their paucity of goals this season. Only five sides have scored fewer than United's 23 this season, and three of them are in the relegation zone.

Meanwhile Bryan Mbeumo himself has 13 goals, just 10 less than the entire Man Utd side. And his Brentford sit in 11th, two places and four points ahead of the Red Devils.

If the transfer were to go ahead in January (and word is it's more likely being viewed for the summer) then there would no doubt be plenty of memes about Mbeumo "downgrading" to Man Utd, even though with his goalscoring ability the Red Devils would shoot up the table.

Garnacho on the way out?

Mbeumo's arrival could just be a value add, or it could be Man Utd balancing out the potential exit of young winger Alejandro Garnacho.

The same Daily Star report that connects Mbeumo to Man Utd also says that in order to sign the Cameroon international now, exits would first be needed and Alejandro Garnacho could well be one of those on the way out.

Garnacho is reportedly open to a Man Utd exit, as he has been frustrated by his limited opportunities to play under Ruben Amorim. And given his talent would not be short of suitors if he were put up for sale.
