Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes that the club “can do better” than winger Alejandro Garnacho and would not be concerned to see him depart Old Trafford.

Garnacho is one of the players touted to leave Man Utd in January amid ongoing concerns over their ability to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Napoli have taken an interest in the player but have seen a €40 million bid rejected amid claims that the Red Devils are looking instead to sell him for a rather more ambitious €70m. Chelsea have held initial conversations over signing Garnacho, too.

FootballTransfers has exclusively revealed that Tottenham are monitoring Garnacho but that this deal is one that is still in its infancy.

While there has been some outcry over potentially losing the Argentina international, Scholes is not one of those who would necessarily be sad to see him go. He did, however, state that if Kobbie Mainoo was allowed to depart, he would be furious.

“Man Utd can probably get better than Garnacho. Although he’s young and there’s more to come he’s scruffy in his technique at times and his decision making at times is really poor. I wouldn’t be worried if they sold him. But Mainoo I’ll be offended by that,” Scholes told TNT Sport following the club’s uncomfortable 3-1 win over Southampton on Thursday.

Kobbie Mainoo transfer rumours persist

Mainoo is a surprising name to have been associated with a move away from Man Utd given the explosion in his form over the course of 2024. He has graduated from an academy player to a regular starter and England international over that time.

Chelsea have been linked with a stunning move for the midfielder, yet it would surely take an astronomical bid for the Red Devils to allow the 19-year-old to depart, particularly to a direct rival.
