Nico Williams: Premier League clubs ready to trigger release clause
Nico Williams of Athletic Club has been targeted by two Premier League clubs who are seeking offensive reinforcements in January and are willing to pay the player’s €58 million release fee.
Arsenal and Tottenham are both willing to stump up the money to sign Nico before the close of the window on 3 February, according to a report in Spain.
FootballTransfers revealed on 2 January that Arsenal have the €58m fee waiting to go should the player indicate that he is open to a move.
Nico previously shut down any transfer talk in the summer as he chose to remain in Bilbao. Barcelona and Chelsea were closely linked with him at that point, but for the time being, these links have gone cold.
Mikel Arteta’s outfit, though, retain an interest amid injury problems to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus, while Spurs need an injection of offensive quality, with owner Daniel Levy coming under heavy fire from the club’s fans.
“Both clubs are willing to pay the €58m release clause, ensuring that Nico Williams’ future will be marked by an intense battle for his signature,” the report says. “This will undoubtedly be one of the most high-profile signings of the season, and Premier League fans will be keeping a close eye on the moves of these London giants in the coming days.”
Arteta’s attacker admission
Arteta has explicitly said that Arsenal are doing everything they can to improve their attack before the end of the transfer window.
“We lost two very important players in Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. We lack goals, we lack people and we lack options. It’s clear,” the Arsenal boss confessed.
“If we can get the right player, that’s why we are actively looking at it.
“We ARE working on it, yes.”
While David Ornstein has confirmed Arsenal’s interest in Nico Williams, he has reported that a deal is likelier for the summer than immediately, which is what Arteta needs for his side.
