Chelsea are set to make a last-gasp bid to sign Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United on Deadline Day.

The Blues have been frustrated in their pursuit of attacking options before the end of the window, and while they have been successful in moving several players on, Enzo Maresca’s squad has not necessarily been strengthened in the manner he might have liked.

Garnacho represents an interesting possibility for the Blues, with Man Utd open to allowing their academy star to leave in a bid to ease their situation with regards the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Mathys Tel could be decisive in the deal, according to Football.London.

The Bayern Munich attacker has left his side furious at his attitude in recent days. FCB wanted to sell him to Tottenham for €60 million but he turned down the move and instead seems to prefer Man Utd. The Red Devils, though, are only willing to offer Bayern a loan with a purchase option and not the guaranteed sale the Bundesliga side want.

Talks with Tel have therefore broken down and appear unlikely to be picked up at this late stage of the transfer window.

Chelsea locked in Man Utd talks

This should be music to the ears of Chelsea, with United poised to mount a renewed assault on Christopher Nkuku, who is seen as an easier target.

Discussions are set to take place throughout the deal over a potential trade, with this transfer one of the deals that could go right to the deadline at 23:00 GMT.

Fabrizio Romano, meanwhile, confirmed interest from Chelsea in Garnacho and hinted there could be a late surprise in the market.

“There is interest from Chelsea, but at the moment, there are still no advanced negotiations, club-to-club,” he told GMS.

“Let’s see if Chelsea will decide to do something last-minute. But as of now, while we are recording, there is still no proposal so there is still a chance for him to stay.”
