Darwin Nunez might have caught the headlines on Wednesday as he missed an open goal for Liverpool against Aston Villa, but Arsenal have been told the Uruguay international would be “gold” for them.

Nunez’s unique brand of chaos has won over many Liverpool fans, but equally his erratic finishing has left many calling for the Uruguay international to be sold.

Never was the unpredictability of the 25-year-old more in evidence when he spurned a huge chance for the Reds that may have seen them go on to pick up three points against Aston Villa. Instead, Arne Slot’s side were held 2-2.

With Nunez’s sale now a distinct possibility, Anfield legend Didi Hamann has advised Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to make a move for the enigmatic South American, claiming the former Benfica man would be “gold” for the Gunners.

“The only real question mark I have about Arsenal’s squad is the centre forward position. And I think even Darwin Nunez, I think Nunez would be gold for Arsenal,” he claimed.

“I think if you've got somebody up top who bullies defenders, who draws defenders in, he always gets the attention of two or three defenders. Obviously, he’s a big unit. He’s quick. The game changes. If you've got somebody up top with a physical presence, with pace, it's a different ballgame.”

'Nunez is the perfect fit for Arsenal'

Hamann believes that Nunez would dovetail nicely into what Arsenal already have at their disposal in terms of offensive weapons.

"They always find space, Arsenal, but it also makes it easier for the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard when they get into these pockets because quick players stretch teams. They simply haven't got it. I think even a Nunez would be a brilliant addition to the squad, but it’s too late for that now and they have to make do with what they have," he told Prime Casino.

Arsenal were expected to sign a striker in January but elected to save their money for the summer. It was a calculated risk but one that backfired when Kai Havertz was struck down by a season-ending injury to join Gabriel Jesus on the sidelines.

Now Arteta’s side will be pressed into action in the summer, but it would come as a huge surprise if they were to move for Nunez, with options such as RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko being considered as a priority.
