Chelsea have been given a worrying assessment of Cole Palmer’s future by Jamie Carragher following Friday’s 3-0 Premier League loss against Brighton.
The Blues’ team at the AmEx Stadium was described by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville as being like a ‘5-a-side’ outfit, with no penetration in attack and a lack of quality in goal.
Palmer was not at his best but has been a driving force for Enzo Maresca’s side this season, and it has been claimed that he will not wait for Chelsea to improve unless they can qualify for the Champions League next season.

Carragher claims Palmer will not wait about
Jamie Carragher delivered the worrying assessment for the Blues in the wake of a game in which they were brushed aside by a mid-table opponent, leaving them fourth ahead of Saturday’s fixtures.
“Chelsea were overperforming at the start of the season,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “There was talk of them being in the title race. You felt they weren’t good enough because of the goalkeeper situation and at the top end of the pitch as well. They’ve probably gone back to what we thought they would be at the start of the season.
“This project in terms of going forward and bringing young players in, what you’ve got to remember is that the best players in this project are waiting for that goalkeeper, that centre-forward. I’m talking about really about Cole Palmer and maybe the central midfield players.

“This idea that this project will take two or three years, the problem with that is that the best players who are in the team now won’t wait. Cole Palmer is one of the best players in the Premier League. You could see a frustration starting to build. He’s good enough to be competing for the biggest honours – he’s scoring in the European Championship final.
“Nottingham Forest are third! Chelsea are out of the cup competitions, the European competition’s not a European competition for Chelsea – they can play their second string. It’s not like they’ve got lots of games.
“They’ve got to get Champions League – if they don’t get that, it’ll be a disaster. Cole Palmer won’t wait around for a couple of years.”
Will Chelsea reach the Champions League?
Chelsea are fourth in the standings and, therefore, on course to reach the Champions League but Manchester City and Newcastle United are only two points behind, with Bournemouth one further back.
While this promises to set up a thrilling finale to the season for neutrals, it will be a nervy run for the out-of-sorts Blues, particularly with the future of star players like Palmer on the line.
