Despite the constant speculation, it has taken until Deadline Day for the England youth international to get his move. The 21-year-old has now officially joined Borussia Dortmund on a half-season loan.

There had been some confusion as to the exact formula of the move, with some reports claiming that a purchase option would be included, while others spoke of a straight loan.

Now, Dortmund have confirmed that the deal does contain a purchase option for the summer. According to Fabrizio Romano, it is, quite incredibly, higher than his €48 million release clause.

Dortmund sign Chukwuemeka

Chukwuemeka struggled to make an impact in his two-and-a-half years at Chelsea. Injury troubles and constant coaching changes meant that he could not get into any kind of playing rhythm and new boss Enzo Maresca clearly didn't favour him.

Given his lack of action in recent times, it is quite bizarre that Dortmund could potentially shell out as much as €50m for him, although that seems highly unlikely at this stage.

"Carney is an extremely talented box-to-box player who caused a sensation in the Premier League at a young age," Dortmund director Sebastian Kehl has said in an official statement.

"His dynamism, his drive to the goal and his assertiveness coupled with great footballing ability make him an exciting player who has not for nothing been through all of England's youth national teams since the U17s.

"This development has recently stalled somewhat in London. Despite the lack of rhythm, we see a great opportunity in this transfer and hope that Carney will find his old strength again with us."
