Mohamed Salah has used his expiring Liverpool contract as fuel to fire the Reds towards the Premier League title, according to Roy Keane.

Salah is in the midst of one of the great individual Premier League seasons, having recorded 25 goals and 16 assists for the campaign – putting him top of both these categories.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have established an 11-point lead atop the standings and look certain to land the crown as second-placed Arsenal battle an injury crisis.

This was underlined on Sunday as they defeated Manchester City 2-0 away from home, with Salah on target for the first and creating the second. It was one of the last major hurdles for the Reds to overcome.

Salah’s blistering form has been put down to his contract situation by Keane, who claims the Egypt international is being motivated by the prospect of landing a bumper deal.

“What might have helped him as well is that his contract was up,” Keane said on Sky Sports. “Sometimes you find a bit of motivation from that.

“He’s thinking obviously: ‘I’m playing for a better deal, if I’m going abroad’.

“I know some people say it’s a distraction, but he’s used it in a really positive way.

“In his interviews, he’s talking well. But contract situations can get a player down. It can affect their pride or their ego. But he’s used that as a bit of energy and I think that’s helped him and almost motivated him a bit more.”

Will Salah leave Liverpool?

Salah has repeatedly claimed that he is not close to renewing with Liverpool in interviews, although the 32-year-old has been tight-lipped over the situation for close to a month.

There have previously been claimed that Salah has “99% agreed” a contract with the Saudi Pro League, where he could move in the summer.

Salah has primarily been linked with Al-Hilal in Saudi, with the Pro League side aiming to fill the void left by Neymar when he departed to Santos in January.
