With 25 goals and 16 assists, he leads the Premier League in both categories but his future continues to hang in the balance as he is out of contract in June and therefore eligible to leave as a free agent.

Speculation has linked Salah with a move to the Saudi Pro League, where he could earn an eye-watering sum of money, yet Fichajes states that he is closing in on a new contract with Liverpool.

The Anfield board has worked tirelessly to prevent the superstar from leaving on a free transfer and the report claims that negotiations have progressed positively.

This contrasts sharply with the claims that Salah made previously in public that there had been little to no progress on contract talks, though these comments were now made some weeks ago and the situation might easily have changed.

"It's my last year at the club and I want to do something special for the city," he told Sky Sports on 3 January. "It's the last six months. There is no progress [on contract talks]. We are far away from any progress, so we just have to wait and see."

On the field, meanwhile, the Egypt star continues to produce performances that have made him the leading contender to win the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

Salah has used contract as motivation

Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane has claimed that Salah’s contractual situation has helped him reach the staggering heights that he has attained this season.

“What might have helped him as well is that his contract was up,” Keane said on Sky Sports. “Sometimes you find a bit of motivation from that.

“He’s thinking obviously: ‘I’m playing for a better deal, if I’m going abroad’.

“I know some people say it’s a distraction, but he’s used it in a really positive way.

“In his interviews, he’s talking well. But contract situations can get a player down. It can affect their pride or their ego. But he’s used that as a bit of energy, and I think that’s helped him and almost motivated him a bit more.”

Until the deal is signed, Liverpool will be wary of the ongoing threat from the Saudi Pro League, which can offer Salah life-changing sums of money and sees the player as it’s flagship star for the immediate future.
