Manchester United are experiencing a difficult campaign on the field but also away from it, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe poised to instigate another round of cost-cutting measures that could see the “mum” of the club brutally sacked after nearly 30 years of service.

Ratcliffe has adopted a ruthless approach to cutting expenditure at Old Trafford, with around 25% of the workforce made redundant in July. With matters on the field failing to improve, he cut Christmas bonuses for staff and has now taken the decision to sack another 200 staff members, according to The Sun.

Among those who are set to lose their post is Jackie Kay, The Times reports. She is regarded as the ‘mum’ of the club who has been in place since 1995. Previously executive assistant to David Gill, she was in the role of head of team operations.

Staff are said to have been left ‘shocked’ by the decision.

An anonymous source told The Sun: “Ultimately, football is a business but there are hundreds of people who work tirelessly behind-the-scenes who contribute to any club's success.

“Morale is already on the floor after last year's job losses. This will come as another big blow.”

Ratcliffe losing the trust of fans

Ratcliffe took over around 25% of Man Utd little over a year ago from the unpopular Glazer family, and while this was initially on a wave of optimism among fans, much of that has since disappeared following a number of controversial measures.

Sir Alex Ferguson was taken off the pay roll as a club ambassador while the staff Christmas party was notoriously cancelled.

Results on the field, meanwhile, have been the worst in the Premier League history of Man Utd, with Ruben Amorim’s side 13th in the standings, as close to the relegation zone as they are to the European spots.
