Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United will pursue a summer deal for Viktor Gyokeres and believes that it would be 'crazy' to suggest otherwise.

The Swedish sharpshooter continues to be the name on everyone's lips despite struggling for fitness in recent weeks. With 77 goals and 22 assists in just 85 appearances for Sporting CP, it is no surprise that Gyokeres is one of football's most in-demand commodities.

The striker did not move in January due to a whopping €100 million release clause, but Sporting have already resigned themselves to losing their 26-year-old megastar in the summer.

Indeed, the Lisbon giants have already agreed to let Gyokeres leave for around €70m and some have suggested that a move to Man Utd is a foregone conclusion. The Red Devils need a striker and the Swede has an excellent relationship with his former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim.

However, FootballTransfers understands that Gyokeres has major doubts about a move to Man Utd. He turns 27 in June and is at the stage of his career where he wants to regularly play Champions League football and challenge for titles.

Romano confirms Gyokeres interest

Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed Man Utd's interest in Gyokeres, but he echoes our reporting that a move to Old Trafford is far from a certainty at this point.

"I think [Man Utd's interest] is obvious, he scored tons of goals with Amorim so the relationship is excellent," he told GIVEMESPORT. "[It] would be crazy to think the opposite. But nothing is decided yet as it will depend on the budget available, European competitions for United and more."

We understand that Newcastle United have been seriously pushing for Gyokeres and repeatedly holding talks with his camp as they brace themselves for an onslaught of interest in Alexander Isak. However, the Magpies are also not guaranteed Champions League football, so the race to sign Gyokeres remains wide open.
