Ruben Amorim has seen enough at Manchester United and is poised to take drastic action in the first-team squad ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham, with Chido Obi Martins among those in line for a first call.

United are in the midst of a nightmare campaign that sees them in the lower half of the standings and unlikely to make a push for European football.

Following the departure of Erik ten Hag in the autumn, things have not picked up under Amorim. The 40-year-old has now been in charge for 20 matches but has won only half of these. His Premier League record reads just four wins from 13 outings, though.

United did not experience the January transfer revolution that they might have wished – in particular they added only Patrick Dorgu to their squad as anything like a major signing – and with Amorim admitting that there are unlikely to be significant funds made available in the summer, he is to turn to the club’s academy.

The Portuguese is not wasting his time doing so, either. Sunday’s clash with Spurs promises to be the beginning of a youth revolution at Old Trafford.

The Athletic reports that this change has been fuelled by injuries to Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer in training this week. Mainoo will definitely miss out, it reports, while there are big doubts over Ugarte and Collyer.

Amorim calls three youth team stars

A major clue was dropped by the U18 team to face Newcastle on Saturday. This did not include either Chido Obi Martins or James Scanlon, both of whom have been working with the first team lately.

While it’s not been confirmed that they will be involved in the fixture against Tottenham, it looks a strong possibility that both will travel for the clash against Ange Postecoglou’s side.

On top of this, 19-year-old Jack Moorehouse will be in the travelling squad for the match, according to the Daily Mail's Nathan Salt. The U21 player has been watched on several occasions in person by Amorim, with the central midfielder having impressed with his ball-carrying ability from the heart of the pitch.

While there is no guarantee of pitch time for Obi Martin, Scanlon or Moorehouse, Amorim is sending a clear message to his Man Utd players: the future is now.
