So will we see the 27-year-old play for his boyhood club again?

Neither Aston Villa nor Man Utd confirmed the presence of a purchase option in their official statements confirming the deal.

It has been widely reported that Villa will have the option of purchasing Rashford at the end of the season, which could take the issue out of his hands to some extent. The Guardian reports that this option is set at €48 million (£40m), a massive discount on his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €78.6m.

Rashford’s issue at Old Trafford has, of course, been with manager Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese head coach went public with his unhappiness regarding the winger’s attitude and went so far as to claim that he’d rather field the goalkeeping coach on the bench than the England international.

Under the current regime, then, it seems difficult to see Rashford pulling on the red shirt again.

Neville on Rashford situation

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, though, is not quite so sure.

“It might be difficult under Ruben Amorim as he’s planted his flag in the ground on what he’s said about Marcus Rashford and that’ll be disappointing for Rashford,” Neville said.

"Don’t rule it out. He could tear it up and then United could want him back but if he disappoints then United may end up with him back. The ideal situation is him thriving at Villa.

"It’s sad. I do feel he has the talent to play for United.”

Certainly, if Rashford does go to Villa and excel, it will be hard for the Old Trafford club to ignore him, particularly after failing to land an attacker in the winter transfer window.

Amorim, though, is likely to prove a substantial obstacle for Rashford to turn out for Man Utd again, with the coach and player clearly at odds.
