Manchester United would be interested in signing an England international whom Ruben Amorim is said to be a ‘big fan’ of, according to the club’s former chief scout.

United are looking to make wholesale changes to their squad this summer but the scope of their spending could come down to the amount of money raised through player sales.

While the focus will likely be on attacking players, a 'dynamic' midfielder is understood to be a top priority for United, particularly with doubts over the long-term future of Kobbie Mainoo, who could be sold this summer after stalling on a new deal at Old Trafford.

Mainoo’s departure could pave way for a big-money midfield signing and former United chief scout Mick Brown claimed that the club are ‘looking’ at Morgan Gibbs-White.

Brown, who worked at United under Sir Alex Ferguson, told Football Insider that Amorim is a ‘big fan’ of the Nottingham Forest star and that a move could be on the cards if Mainoo is sold.

However, Brown conceded that Gibbs-White would not come cheap, particularly with Forest on course to qualify for the Champions League next season, with the fee likely to prove preventative for United.

Why Gibbs-White could be tempted by Man Utd transfer

With Christian Eriksen also set to depart and uncertainty surrounding players such as Casemiro and Mason Mount, United are keen to sign a midfielder regardless of Mainoo’s future, having been most recently linked to Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha.

However, a creative player like Gibbs-White may be more appealing to United and the club will be hoping to take advantage of the 25-year-old only having two years remaining on his contract.

The likes of Tottenham and Liverpool have also been linked to Gibbs-White and the player may still be tempted to quit Forest after struggling to convince Thomas Tuchel of his international capabilities ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Despite five goals and seven assists this season, Gibbs-White was only selected in Tuchel’s first England squad after Cole Palmer dropped out through injury and he failed to make the matchday team for the game against Albania.

Forest would likely demand a fee in excess of €70 million for Gibbs-White knowing that securing a top four finish in the Premier League could help ward off any interest in their star man.
