The 22-year-old has scored 19 goals in all competitions this season and netted a hat-trick for France’s Under-21s in their 5-3 friendly win against England on Friday in front of the watchful eye of a number of Premier League scouts.

With many teams across Europe desperate to sign a striker this summer, Ekitike is expected to be in demand and United have identified the youngster as an alternative to Benjamin Sesko or Victor Osimhen if neither prove attainable in the window.

And Romano revealed on Twitter that Ektike is ‘expected’ to leave Frankfurt this summer, with Premier League sides having already ‘started calling’ for the striker’s signature.

However, with four years still remaining on his contract, Frankfurt are unlikely to sell Ekitike on the cheap and could demand a fee in excess of €70 million with teams such as Arsenal and Chelsea also said to be interested.

United banking on Champions League football to snag top targets

Ekitike appears to have finally kick-started his career after a difficult time at former side Paris Saint-Germain, where he made just 12 Ligue 1 starts in 18 months.

The Frenchman is enjoying the best campaign of his career after becoming the focal point of Frankfurt’s attack following the sale of Omar Marmoush to Manchester City in January.

With Sesko remaining a major target for Arsenal and Osimhen likely to command a significant financial package including his wages, Ekitike may prove to be a shrewd target for United, particularly if they seal Champions League football next season by lifting the Europa League.

However, a lot could depend on the futures of players such as Rasmus Hojlund, with United needing to sell before they can make significant investments into their squad as Ruben Amorim targets wholesale changes this summer.
