Manchester United could miss out on one of their bargain transfer targets this summer after reports that a Premier League rival has given the ‘green light’ to a deal.

PSR limitations mean that United will be operating under tight constraints in the market and Ruben Amorim’s side are looking at low-cost ways to improve the squad after a disastrous campaign.

With multiple forwards wanted by the club, Spanish outlet Fichajes claim that United are among the sides who have run the rule over Ferran Torres, who has recently recaptured his best form for Barcelona.

The former Manchester City star has played somewhat of a bit part role since joining Barcelona in 2022 but he has already matched his best goal return for the club this season despite only making seven starts in La Liga.

The report claims that, while United and Liverpool remain interested in Torres, it is Aston Villa who lead the race for the 25-year-old, with manager Unai Emery giving the ‘green light’ over a transfer after being ‘convinced’ that the player fits ‘perfectly’ into his attack.

Barcelona are said to ‘welcome’ a sale for the right price, thought to be around €35 to 40 million in order to balance their books and increase their spending power this summer.

’Cards on the table’ for Torres Premier League return

Torres has become more integral as a role player to Barcelona in recent weeks, scoring eight times in all competitions across his last 14 appearances, all of which total just 465 minutes.

But even with his increase in output, Torres is aware that he is unlikely to oust Lamine Yamal, Raphinha or Robert Lewandowski in attack, with Barca also looking to add at least one other forward such as Nico Williams this summer.

Consequently, Torres may look to explore his options this summer as he approaches the final two years of his contract and Fichajes states that the ‘cards are on the table’ for a return to the Premier League.

Having seen the rejuvenation in Marco Asensio’s career at Villa, Torres may look to emulate his Spanish counterpart and join Emery’s side in a move that may leave United and Liverpool forced to look elsewhere to find a cost-price solution to their transfer conundrum.
