Manchester United have been told to “rip up” their first-team squad during the 2025 summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have endured a miserable 2024-25 campaign and Ruben Amorim has recently admitted that his side will need to sell before they can buy this summer.

However, club legend Gary Neville has urged the club’s hierarchy to give Amorim the funds needed to make several big-money signings and complete a major overhaul of the playing squad at Old Trafford.

“I think they’ll back him [Amorim],” Neville told Sky Sports after Man Utd’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon. “I think they’ll back him in the summer and I think they’ll give him money and the chance to alter this squad.

“It’s a really poor squad. It’s been expensively recruited over the last few years but it needs ripping up. The lack of pace in midfield, attack and in wing-back areas is unbelievable.

“Up front today they had [Joshua] Zirkzee, [Alejandro] Garnacho, who’s got a bit of pace, and [Christian] Eriksen. Last week it was [Rasmus] Hojlund, Zirkzee and Eriksen.

“You’ve got Casemiro and [Bruno] Fernandes in midfield, who aren’t the quickest, and you’ve got two wing-backs [Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui] who are full-backs and can’t create up top.”

Neville concluded: “His [Amorim’s] attacking options to score goals are absolutely none.”

Man Utd’s summer transfer plans

Hojlund is without a goal in his last 20 appearances across all competitions, while Zirkzee hasn’t scored in the Premier League since netting a brace against Everton on 1 December.

As a result, Man Utd are expected to prioritise signing a new centre forward during the upcoming summer transfer window, while they are also hoping to finalise a deal for Sporting CP wonderkid Geovany Quenda as Amorim looks to bolster his wing-back options.

Central midfield is an area of concern too, with Man Utd tipped to sign a replacement for the outgoing Christian Eriksen ahead of the new campaign.
