Jamie Carragher claims that the current Manchester United side is the ‘worst of his lifetime’ and has taken aim at new head coach Ruben Amorim, who has failed to stop the bleeding at Old Trafford.

Carragher’s comments come off the back of United drawing 1-1 in San Sebastian against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, a fixture in which Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty midway through the second half levelled Joshua Zirkzee’s earlier opener.

But while the Red Devils have progressed in Europe, in which they remain undefeated this season, they have foundered in the Premier League, sitting 14th in the standings and well off the expected standard.

They have lurched from crisis to crisis, and Amorim, who has won only five of 16 league fixtures, losing eight, has not helped, former Liverpool star Carragher argues.

Writing for The Telegraph, the 47-year-old Carragher said: “No-one expected it would get even worse. When watching United now, the question I cannot shake off is: ‘How bad is this going to get?’

“This is the worst United team of my lifetime and the bare minimum that could have been expected after Amorim took charge, that the team would look like they are being coached better than they were under Ten Hag, has not materialised.”

Amorim has failed to mirror Arteta impact

Carragher says that he expected a transformation at Man Utd under Amorim similar to the one that Mikel Arteta achieved when he was appointed as Arsenal manager in 2019.

“There are many obvious similarities, from the lowly league position to a squad which needs rejuvenating as it has too many high-earning under-performers,” he said. “But from day one you felt Arteta was moving Arsenal in the right direction.

“Amorim’s early struggles at United are a reminder of how tough it is to revive a fallen giant. At the moment, United fans must feel like they are pinning their hopes on blind faith based on Amorim’s record at Sporting Lisbon.

“United’s players have not responded well to his methods. Has a single player looked any better than they were under Ten Hag? In fairness, most of the United players have surrendered any right to express disapproval about any manager given how poor they have been for so long.”

Man Utd face Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday, with the pressure set to ramp up on Amorim if the Red Devils suffer another loss.
