Manchester United are desperately pursuing a summer move for Viktor Gyokeres, who will definitely leave Sporting CP in the summer.

The Red Devils are scrambling to get their ducks in a row ahead of one of the most crucial transfer windows in recent history. Man Utd need to raise funds and can ill-afford to waste time.

This has been nicely illustrated by the fact that they are set to be beaten by Chelsea to the signing of Sporting CP wonderkid Geovany Quenda. Reports in Portugal had claimed that a move to Man Utd was all but done.

However, Man Utd's lack of cash and uncertainty surrounding their sporting situation meant that they could not in good conscience commit to a summer transfer this early in the year, which allowed Chelsea to swoop in and match Sporting's demands without batting an eyelid.

It is the first big blow of a summer window that could make or break Ruben Amorim's time at the club.

Man Utd's Gyokeres problem

Man Utd are desperate to add a striker in the summer and naturally, Amorim's former Sporting protégé Viktor Gyokeres has emerged as one of the top options for the job.

As has been known for some time and now confirmed by TEAMtalk, the Swede will definitely leave Portugal this summer and Man Utd ar concretely interested in acquiring his services.

A transfer of Gyokeres has already been approved by Sporting but the report contains one eye-catching detail. The outlet claims that clubs will have to pay his €100 million release clause in the summer.

This goes completely against what has been reported elsewhere in recent months. It had been asserted and widely confirmed by credible sources that Sporting would be prepared to sell the 26-year-old for €60m-€70m.

Even at that reduced price, it would have been a challenge for Man Utd to sign him, especially should they miss out on Champions League football. FootballTransfers previously reported that Gyokeres, who will turn 27 in June, won't entertain a move to a non-Champions League side.

At €100m, Gyokeres will surely be too expensive for Man Utd even if they were to manage to offload several players and raise significant funds.
