Manchester United have a genuine interest in Xavi Simons, but a deal looks unlikely to materialise at this stage, according to a report.

The Dutchman could be one of the names to watch in the summer transfer market despite only joining RB Leipzig permanently in January when the Bundesliga side took everyone by surprise with the announcement of his acquisition.

Simons had been on loan from PSG, but Leipzig shelled out a club-record €50 million plus a potential €30m in add-ons to sign him on a deal until 2027.

However, the length of his contract is already an indication of things to come. He did not sign on for the Bundesliga maximum of five years precisely because he is expected to leave Leipzig in the not-too-distant future.

There is no guarantee that he will depart already this summer, but it is possible, especially if the Saxons miss out on qualification to the Champions League.

Xavi to Man Utd truth

Man Utd are one of the sides heavily linked with a summer move for Simons, but the prospect of a deal has always looked outlandish due to Leipzig likely demanding a fee in the region of €80m.

Ben Jacobs has now confirmed that Man Utd are indeed interested in the Dutchman but that a transfer to Old Trafford is unlikely as things stand. There are simply too many obstacles that the Red Devils would have to overcome.

Indeed, the journalist states the €80m price tag seems insurmountable for Man Utd unless they can complete several lucrative sales. Additionally, the simple truth is that a player like Simons is not a priority for the club at present.

Man Utd are desperately scrambling to add a centre-forward and are not actively pursuing attacking midfielders. It is also doubtful whether Simons would want to make the move should Man Utd fail to get into the Champions League.

His teammate Benjamin Sesko, for example, has already decided that he will only join a club competing in Europe's premier competition. It would be surprising if Simons had a different stance.
