Negotiations between Florian Wirtz and Bayer Leverkusen over a new contract have 'already long been completed,' but the wonderkid has still yet to make a final decision on his future, according to German media.

The Germany international is one of Europe's biggest talents and is already regarded as a world-class player despite his tender age of just 21. Wirtz led Bayer Leverkusen to a historic domestic double lead last season and has continued his impressive form this term.

Wirtz has notched a whopping 15 goals and 13 assists across all competitions so far this term, although he is currently nursing a minor injury which has kept him out of Leverkusen's and Germany's recent games.

It has been a bit of a nightmare for the Werkself without their talismanic attacking midfielder as they recently crashed out of the Champions League and also lost to Werder Bremen. They did bounce back with an incredible 4-3 win over Stuttgart prior to the international break, though.

Still, Leverkusen's failure to recapture their stunning form of last season is said to have planted doubts in Wirtz's head over whether he should continue with the club beyond this season.

Wirtz still unsure about future

In December, German outlet Kicker triumphantly reported that Wirtz had agreed to extend his contract with Bayer, meaning that he would definitely stay for at least another season. His current deal runs until 2027.

However, since that reporting, precious little has actually materialised in the way of a contract signing, prompting the publication to backtrack. Kicker now concedes that Wirtz still hasn't made a final decision on his next move but asserts that negotiations on the general contract terms have 'already long been completed.'

The only thing that stands in the way of Wirtz extending his deal is the man himself. He has yet to give the final green light for the extension, so uncertainty over his future lingers on.

Contrary to reporting elsewhere, it is claimed that Wirtz's future does not hinge on that of head coach Xabi Alonso, who is being courted by Real Madrid. Wirtz will make an independent judgment, although whether Alonso stays or goes will surely play some part in his decision,

His family certainly believes that staying at Leverkusen until 2026 would be the right decision. At 21, they feel he can still develop his cognitive faculties and become more level-headed and a real leader.

Leverkusen provides a perfect environment for this, while also allowing him to fully focus on the 2026 World Cup without the distractions that a move to a new side would entail.

Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that Wirtz could make a final decision within the next month.
