Borussia Dortmund will reportedly “open talks” with Chelsea as they look to extend Carney Chukwuemeka’s spell at the club.

The 21-year-old joined Dortmund on loan during the January transfer window, following a difficult period under Enzo Maresca, and the German giants are already eager to engage in negotiations over a new deal.

That is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who posted on X: “Borussia Dortmund will open talks with Chelsea to keep Carney Chukwuemeka also next season.

“Deal conditions to be discussed again, but BVB wanna try to keep Carney at the club after 6 month loan.”

Chukwuemeka racked up just 130 minutes of action at Chelsea during the first-half of the campaign, after being placed in Maresca’s ‘bomb squad’ during the summer, and he is widely expected to leave the club on a permanent deal after being deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

Chukwuemeka has only started one Bundesliga game since his arrival in Germany, but Dortmund boss Niko Kovac was eager to heap praise on the 21-year-old following his performance off the bench against Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday night.

The England youngster won back possession in the build-up to both of Dortmund’s first two goals, while a mazy dribble led to their third strike in quick succession.

“When Carney came on, things turned around,” Kovac told reporters after the match (as per the Bundesliga website).

“Carney was the game changer for us. He's fantastic on the ball, turns quickly, and attacks the last line. He's getting better with every game.”

Chukwuemeka, whose Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €18 million, has three years remaining on his current contract at Chelsea, although Dortmund are eager to reach an agreement to extend his stay at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Dortmund reportedly have the option to sign Chukwuemeka for a fee of €35m this summer, but it remains to be seen if they will pursue a permanent transfer or another loan deal.
