Chelsea are willing to pay over the odds in a player-plus-cash deal for Marc Guehi, according to a report.

The Blues are once again in the market for a centre-back this summer. Despite signing a host of defenders in recent years, Chelsea are still not entirely happy with their situation at the heart of the backline.

€80 million signing Wesley Fofana can't stay fit for an extended period of time, Benoit Badiashile has struggled to become a regular starter, Aaron Anselmino is too inexperienced for Premier League football and Trevoh Chalobah was already forced out of the club last summer - only to be brought back in January.

The expectation is that Chalobah will again depart Stamford Bridge this summer. He mightily impressed on loan at Crystal Palace in the first half of the season and the Eagles are open to welcoming him back to the club.

This is good news for Chelsea as they themselves are looking to re-sign a Palace player. The Blues want to bring back Eagles star Marc Guehi and are looking to offer up Chalobah in a swap deal.

Chelsea to overpay for Guehi

At least that is according to The Mirror, which reports that Chelsea are preparing a player-plus-cash swap deal for Guehi, which would see them part with Chalobah and a hefty sum of money.

As Guehi is a regular England international and one of the Premier League's best defenders, Palace are said to value him at a whopping €81m (£70m), while Chelsea believe that Chalobah is worth €35m (£30m).

Chelsea are said to be willing to bid up to €58m (£50m) for Guehi and it is unsurprisingly claimed that such a deal would 'suit' Palace, who are 'resigned' to losing Guehi as he only has a year left on his contract and has no intention of signing an extension.

Chelsea are lining up a package worth €93m to re-sign a player they sold in 2021 for just €23 million. The West London giants did not manage to include a buy-back clause in his deal when he left, which is now coming back to bite them.
