Football transfer news reporter Fabrizio Romano has reviewed some of the biggest stories today, including Manchester United’s first major deal of the summer and moves at Manchester City.

Man Utd confident of Cunha deal

Manchester United are closing in a deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to Romano.

“We’re entering into important days for Matheus Cunha,” he told his YouTube channel.

“Man Utd believe they can close this deal for him very soon. Why? Because they’re prepared to pay the release clause of £62.5 million, but in instalments. So they need to get in contact with Wolves.

“Contact with the player’s side is going very well. Cunha is keen on the move, the project is attractive and the salary is being discussed.

“Let’s wait for the final steps of the story. The expectation is to see Matheus Cunha as the first signing of the summer for Manchester United. That’s the idea, that’s the plan.”

Ederson braced for Man City exit

Across Manchester, City’s first big deal of the summer looks like it could be a sale, with Romano detailing the latest on Ederson’s future.

“Ederson was quite close to Saudi Arabia a year ago but the deal didn’t happen,” he says. “Now Man City have received approaches from several clubs for him.

“There is still no official bid on the table at Man City so the situation remains open. But City anticipate a move from Saudi clubs for Ederson. The expectation is for something to happen.”

Romano then confirmed FootballTransfers' exclusive news from January that City want Porto's Diogo Costa, adding: “One year ago, he was open to the move, but the original plan at City was for Ortega to be their first goalkeeper and a young player they liked from Germany as their second choice, but now there are new possibilities open.

“Diogo Costa is a player they appreciate – he’s one option but not the only one – but the future of Ederson at Man City is considered to be absolutely open.”

Ancelotti to leave Real Madrid for Brazil?

Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey loss to Barcelona on Saturday was likely to final nail in Carlo Ancelotti’s coffin at the Bernabeu, but the Italian is set to leave with dignity and has the possibility of landing a bumper contract with Brazil.

“There’s a strong possibility of seeing Carlo Ancelotti leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season,” Romano said. “This final was always going to be important to see the reaction after the Champions League loss. The expectation remains the same: Ancelotti to leave Real Madrid.

“The Brazilian federation is more than confident. Brazil have no interest in waiting for the Ancelotti situation to be cleared after the Club World Cup.

“The clear indication is that Brazil want Ancelotti at the beginning of June as their new head coach. They’re confident and have offered a really important salary that they believe if the biggest for a national team coach. They’re prepared to do everything. Brazil are pushing to have him.

“They’re waiting for Real Madrid to make a decision and say goodbye to Carlo Ancelotti in a nice way.”

Flick close to new Barcelona deal

While Real Madrid prepare for a new era, Barcelona are planning to extend the deal of their current boss, Romano says.

“Hansi Flick is advancing very well with talks to extend his contract at Barcelona for one more season: from 2026 to 2027. Why not longer? He doesn’t want a long contract. It’s not something negative; it’s just his style. He loves to focus on the present and winning titles. It’s his mentality,” Romano explained.
