Fans fear that Liverpool’s record signing, though, got a little too carried away in the aftermath.

Television images saw him pour what appeared to be champagne over devout Muslim Mohamed Salah, who had clearly warned Nunez about doing so moments before the No.9 showered the Egypt international.

With Islam forbidding its followers to touch alcohol, it left Nunez in the midst of an online storm that saw the striker branded a “f***ing idiot’ by some supporters.

Nunez is one of the players expected to be moved on by Arne Slot in the summer, with a return of seven goals in 43 appearances insufficient to keep him at Anfield. On top of this, the striker also took to social media to criticise the manager this week before hastily deleting the post.

Options to move the 25-year-old on are likely to be thin on the ground, with Liverpool set to struggle to recoup much of his €85 million transfer fee.

Perhaps the most obvious option for him as a move to the Saudi Pro League, yet Nunez’s actions towards Salah have been perceived by fans as a potential deal breaker with the big-spending league.

One fan said: “Can’t be joining the Saudi league, he won’t know how to act.”

“Salah clearly stated he didn't want it on him so you have to respect that but I'm surprised Darwin didn't miss the target that time,” one user joked.

Did Nunez really cover Salah in alcohol?

It is likely that the drink that Nunez covered Salah in was a non-alcoholic beverage.

While clubs are free to implement their own policies when celebrating the Premier League title, Liverpool shifted their approach to non-alcoholic alternatives during their previous celebrations when they won the 2019/20 title due to the presence of high-profile Muslim players Salah and Sadio Mane.

Liverpool have not confirmed this to be the case in this situation, but it is unlikely Nunez has transgressed on Salah’s religious beliefs.
