Winners and losers of Mohamed Salah's new Liverpool contract

Mohamed Salah has officially signed a new Liverpool contract to keep him at the club for at least another year.
The Egypt legend has been heavily linked with a Bosman move to the Saudi Pro League during the 2025 summer transfer window, but he has ended speculation of a Liverpool exit by agreeing a contract extension at Anfield.
OFFICIAL: Mohamed Salah signs new Liverpool contract
Salah’s existing deal was due to expire at the end of June, however he has agreed fresh terms with Arne Slot’s side that will keep him at the club beyond the 2024-25 campaign.
Liverpool are yet to confirm the length of Salah’s new deal, although it’s believed that he is now contracted to the club until June 2027.
Below, FootballTransfers runs through the winners and losers of Salah’s new deal at Liverpool.

Winner - Liverpool
Liverpool are certainly the biggest winners of all from this scenario. The prospect of losing Salah, who has been a talisman since his arrival in 2017, was an extremely worrying one and the Reds have been handed a major boost by his new deal.
The Egyptian remains one of the best players in world football and while he is now 32 years old, his form over the past 12 months suggests that he remains at the peak of his powers.
Replacing Salah this summer would’ve been a monumental task, but Liverpool now have ample time to find a suitable successor, while they will most likely be able to enjoy his mesmeric ability on a weekly basis for the next two years.
Loser - The rest of the Premier League
Every other Premier League club would’ve been licking their lips at the thought of Salah departing England, but the opposite is now true: they’ll be terrified.
The 32-year-old has been in unstoppable form so far this season and there’s no reason to suggest he will suffer a dip in performance next campaign.
As a result, Salah will most likely fire Liverpool into the title race yet again in 2025-26, with Arsenal and Manchester City set to face an uphill battle to dethrone the Reds.
Winner - Arne Slot
In addition to Liverpool, Arne Slot is also a major winner from Salah’s new deal. The Dutchman has enjoyed an unbelievable first season in charge at Anfield, but his good work threatened to be undone if Salah followed Trent Alexander-Arnold to the exit door.
A summer rebuild would’ve been necessary and Slot may have struggled to build on his debut campaign at the club.
Instead, he can still rely on a world-class forward to deliver moments of magic in the final third and his attention can remain on adapting Liverpool’s tactical nous to challenge for the Champions League title next year.
Loser - Saudi Pro League
Salah was the Saudi Pro League’s priority transfer target for 2025 - and they have failed to sign him.
The allure of the richest league in world football appears to be diminishing slightly and their failure to finalise an agreement with Salah proves that the biggest superstars on the planet still favour remaining in Europe.
Vinicius Junior also appears more likely to sign a new Real Madrid contract than move to Saudi Arabia, so alternative - and less high-profile - targets will need to be pursued instead.
Winner - Brentford
Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool in recent years, with the Cameroon international touted to replace Salah at Anfield.
However, Liverpool are now almost guaranteed to abandon their pursuit of Mbeumo, and with fellow suitors Man Utd and Arsenal looking to sign other targets, Brentford are set to keep their star man.
Thomas Frank will be buoyed by this news and will be able to focus on strengthening other areas of his squad, rather than finding a replacement for Mbeumo.

Loser - Darwin Nunez
Darwin Nunez will almost certainly leave Liverpool following news of Salah’s contract extension.
The Uruguayan was extremely likely to depart regardless, but the Reds now don’t need to fund a move for a Salah replacement and they can instead focus their efforts on landing a prolific centre forward capable of consistently scoring goals.
Nunez doesn’t match that description and his underwhelming spell at Anfield looks set to conclude this summer, with a move to Saudi Arabia potentially on the cards.
