Manchester City have launched a €275 million bid to sign Lamine Yamal from Barcelona, which could set a new world transfer record.

Man City have made a “historic” offer to Barca for the 17-year-old superstar, who has 13 goals and 19 assists across all competitions this season, according to reports in Spain.

Pep Guardiola’s side would break the existing transfer record should this deal progress to fruition, with Neymar’s €222m move from the Blaugrana to PSG setting the previous mark.

Lamine Yamal, however, has a release fee of €1 billion so Barcelona are under no obligation to accept this incredible offer, which is reported by Fichajes.

Previously, president Joan Laporta has claimed that Barca turned down an offer worth €200m from PSG for the young superstar.

Lamine Yamal: Caution over new Barcelona contract

Barcelona are expected to tie Lamine down to an extended contract this summer. The only reason that no deal has been completed to date is because the player is still under 18 and there is, therefore, red tape around his situation as he is not legally an adult.

There have been some doubts raised over the situation in recent days, fuelled by the recent scandal that has raised questions over the eligibility of Dani Olmo’s re-registration for Barca in January. LaLiga claims that a €100m payment was falsely included in the club’s budget to enhance their standing in regards to Financial Fair Play (FFP).

Lamine’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has also grown wary of the club because of the way that both Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo were treated. The pair both accepted low salaries during loan stints with the expectation they would be paid properly when finally signed on, yet neither deal was concluded.

De Bruyne’s successor?

Manchester City, meanwhile, have flexed their financial muscles in the past but have the threat of the Premier League’s 115 charges still hanging over them. By the summer, they should know the outcome of this extensive investigation and be able to plan properly from there.

With Guardiola’s side having endured a miserable season, it would be little surprise to see them seek an injection of quality in the summer, and a €275m move for Lamine Yamal would be the perfect message to their rivals that they truly mean business.

Kevin De Bruyne, for so long an icon at the Etihad Stadium, has announced he is leaving in the summer, and Lamine could be the ideal heir for the Belgian.

He possesses an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €174m, and while the transfer fee being discusses is astronomical, if Man City were able to tie him to a long contract, they may well feel that the money is worth it given Yamal’s potential to be at the top of the game for the next 15 years.
