Romano drops contract BOMB that changes Amorim's Man Utd plans

Fabrizio Romano has announced that Fiorentina are set to extend David de Gea's contract, effectively putting to bed the rumours of a sensational return to Manchester United.
The Spaniard was axed by then-Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag in 2023 due to his weaknesses in possession. The Dutchman wanted a goalkeeper more suited to his style and eventually reunited with his former Ajax protégé Andre Onana.

De Gea remained a free agent for a full year but ultimately had the last laugh as Ten Hag was sacked last October, while Onana has been very hit-and-miss for the Red Devils.
After a poor start to his spell, Onana eventually improved and put up solid numbers, but he has again been guilty of some wobbly performances and high-profile blunders this season.
In fact, there have been reports that new Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim could look to replace the Cameroon international. Recently, it was even claimed that he could be interested in bringing De Gea back to Old Trafford.

De Gea to secure Fiorentina extension
However, this sensational rumour has now been put to bed by Fabrizio Romano. According to the Italian transfer insider, Fiorentina will exercise their option to extend De Gea's contract until 2026.
The Spaniard joined the Serie A club last summer after his one-year hiatus and has been nothing short of sensational. De Gea has been one of Italy's best goalkeepers this season and he made FootballTransfers' Best XI for the first half of the campaign.

Fiorentina are enjoying a solid campaign and currently find themselves eighth in the table and just four points off the top four. They have conceded fewer goals than Bologna in fourth and Lazio in sixth, thanks in no small part to De Gea.
After a year away from the game, the 34-year-old has enjoyed a veritable renaissance in Florence and he is now set to be rewarded with a contract extension by La Viola.
