Manchester United have enquired about the availability of Patrik Schick, according to German media.

The Bayer Leverkusen striker is in the midst of a strange season. Despite not really being favoured by head coach Xabi Alonso, Schick has scored a whopping 23 goals in all competitions.

The Czech's relationship with Alonso is one of German football's great enigmas. It has been described as professional but very tense, with Schick often being forced to sit on the bench despite easily being one of the Bundesliga's best strikers when on form.

Alonso prefers the more mobile Victor Boniface - or, at times, no striker at all - but the Nigerian has often had to deal with injuries while also making negative headlines with some of his antics on and off the pitch.

Leverkusen are therefore heading into a bizarre summer window in which they will look to offload Boniface while also being faced with the departure of Schick, who is unhappy about only playing second fiddle.

Man Utd make Schick enquiry

According to Sky Germany, Schick is looking to get out and his mind is unlikely to be changed by the potential departure of Boniface. He certainly will have no shortage of suitors, and intriguingly, Man Utd are said to have made an enquiry.

There is an acceptance that, at 29, he does not really fit the age profile of striker Man Utd are looking for, but some feel that this could be an opportunity that is simply too good to pass up for the cash-strapped club.

Schick dreams of playing in the Premier League, and a move to Old Trafford would surely appeal to him, although Leverkusen are demanding a sizeable €25 million to €30m.

It would come as a surprise to see Man Utd shell out that much on a 29-year-old given their financial situation and the need to really get the summer window right. However, he would still be a cheaper alternative to most top strikers available on the market

Man Utd's German director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who worked in the Red Bull system during Schick's one-year spell at RB Leipzig, has already held initial talks to sound out a move.
