Why Lionel Messi could face PUNISHMENT after scoring on MLS debut
Lionel Messi could be handed a punishment by those in charge of the MLS after he refused to speak to reporters after Inter Miami’s 2-0 win over New York Red Bulls on Saturday night.
Messi, 36, scored his first MLS goal on his debut in the competition with a last minute strike inside the penalty area, but the 2022 World Cup winner may land in hot water after he didn’t field questions from reporters following the match.
MLS rules state that every player must be available for an interview after each game.

However, Inter Miami spokeswoman revealed that Messi would not be speaking to the press following the win, which leaves the Argentine susceptible to a punishment after breaching the MLS’ regulations.
It remains to be seen whether Messi will face a fine or any other form of punishment, but a decision has not yet been taken regarding what punishment the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward may receive.

Messi’s Inter Miami start
Messi has started life at Inter Miami like a man possessed, netting 11 goals and providing three assists in his nine appearances for the club so far.
In addition, Inter Miami have won every single game since Messi joined the club, including the Leagues Cup final, which saw the David Beckham-owned team win their first trophy since their formation in 2018.
The 2-0 victory over New York Red Bulls was Inter Miami’s first MLS win since May, ending a run of 11 games without a league win.
Messi started the triumph over New York Red Bulls on the bench, but was substituted onto the pitch for the final 30 minutes and got on the scoresheet in the 89th minute after some sublime build-up from Inter Miami, including a brilliant through ball for Benjamin Cremaschi from Messi himself.
Inter Miami’s next game is against Nashville on Thursday, 31 August.
