Gremio manager Renato Gaucho has admitted that “it will take a miracle” for Luis Suarez to remain at the club next season as he eyes a reunion with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.

Suarez, 36, left his boyhood club Nacional to join Gremio in January 2023, but his contract with the Brazilian club expires at the end of December.

As a result, he will become a free agent in January and Gremio don’t expect him to extend his stay at the club. Instead, the former Liverpool and Barcelona forward is likely to join his former Blaugrana team-mate Messi in Florida.

Several reports have stated that Suarez will become the latest former Barcelona star to join Messi at the David Beckham-owned team, following the summer arrivals of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

Gaucho recent comments suggest that a move to Inter Miami does appear to be a very likely scenario for Suarez.

After Suarez netted the only goal of the game in Gremio’s 1-0 win over Bahia on Saturday, Gaucho admitted to the media, via GOAL: “It will take a miracle [for Suarez to stay]. He already has plans for 2024. He made that clear a few months ago and I’m not expecting a miracle.

“It’s his decision. I’d like him to stay, but we have to be honest with our fans. If he ends up staying, it’ll be a miracle, and that miracle comes down to him.”

Suarez has made 47 appearances for Gremio in all competitions during the 2023 season, scoring 20 goals and providing 16 assists. Furthermore, he has scored or assisted at least one goal in 10 of his past 12 games for the club.

As for Messi at Inter Miami, the 2022 World Cup winner helped the club to their first ever piece of silverware within weeks of arriving. They won Leagues Cup in July, with Messi scoring 10 goals in seven games in the competition.
