Germany are set to beat England in the World Cup final, according to data analytics experts SciSports, who simulated the competition thousands of times to gain accurate insights into the performance of each team.

The data suggests that it will be a tournament dominated by European teams, with four UEFA nations expected to reach the semi-finals of the competition, while only Brazil and Argentina from outside Europe will even reach the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, it is Germany who are expected to come out on top, despite England boasting the highest expected transfer value (ETV) in the competition and the highest SciSkill score, a value given to players based on their abilities and driven by hundreds of in-game data points.

World Cup 2022: Teams, fixtures, results, favourites

Both of the predicted finalists are expected to progress through their groups without any issues. Indeed, they are given a 93.5% and 90% chance of qualification respectively. These are the highest figures in the competition, with only Brazil otherwise posting more than a 92% chance of qualification.

Of the big favourites, Argentina at 87% and Portugal at 82% are given the greatest chance of suffering a first-round exit, although the report was compiled before the unknown of how Cristiano Ronaldo’s actions came into the equation, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner seemingly destabilising the camp thanks to an interview with Piers Morgan.

Once in the knockout stages, it is the UEFA nations expected to come to the fore, with Denmark’s defeat to Argentina in the round of 16 the only case of a European country being eliminated by a rival from elsewhere across the globe.
