Mbappe was in inspired form on Sunday evening during France’s 3-1 win over Poland in their World Cup last-16 clash.

The PSG superstar assisted the first goal just before half-time for Olivier Giroud with a brilliant through pass.

The 23-year-old then doubled France’s lead in the second half with a stunning shot into the root of the net from just outside the area.

And he grabbed a second for himself and a third for France in injury time with another brilliant curler into the top corner.

Mbappe is now the top-scorer at the 2022 World Cup with five goals in four games.

He also has two assists now, meaning only England’s Harry Kane has more in the tournament.

We asked readers on Twitter at full time if Mbappe was now the best player in the world. 57.7 per cent of those polled believed he is the number one on the planet, with 42.3% saying he is not.

His current heroics follow on from Mbappe’s incredible performances at the 2018 World Cup, which helped France win the tournament.

The attacker has been spectacular for PSG since joining for €180 million from Monaco in 2017.

He has scored 190 goals in just 237 games and won four Ligue 1 titles.

Mbappe had seemed destined to join Real Madrid ahead of the current season but completed a dramatic turnaround by penning a three-year extension with PSG at the end of May.

Throughout 2021-22, it had been unanimously accepted that he would sign for Madrid on a Bosman transfer when his previous PSG contract expired.

Having rejected a €200 million bid from Real Madrid for Mbappe in the summer of 2021, the Frenchman was believed to have already agreed a free transfer move to the club he supported as a child.

This was reinforced by the fact that he rejected numerous offers of a PSG extension throughout the campaign.

But, in a shock twist, Mbappe decided to sign a new deal at PSG in May.
