Manchester United face missing out on one of their top transfer targets this summer as rivals City muscle in on Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips, 26, has become one of England's premier midfielders since coming under the wing of Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road.

He continued to shine even during a tough season for the Whites which saw the Argentine lose his job, while he is also considered a key piece of Gareth Southgate's England team.

United have long been linked with his signature, but now a new contender has emerged.

According to Football Insider, City have submitted a formal offer for Phillips' services, having already clinched the blockbuster signing of Erling Haaland this summer.

Phillips is now a top target for the Premier League champions, who are moving quickly to beat their neighbours to the punch.

What is Phillips' stance on transfer?

Phillips is a native of Leeds and has been at Elland Road since the age of 14, when he joined their academy.

And despite the constant transfer speculation, publicly he continues to profess his loyalty to the team now coached by Jesse Marsch, who narrowly avoided relegation back to the Championship after taking over from Bielsa.

"I've made what I want to do clear. I've made my intentions clear. I want to be at Leeds and I'll focus on that until my contract ends," he told BBC Radio Leeds back in May.

"It's always been something I've been confident about sorting whenever it needs sorting.

"There's always going to be noise when you're an England international and you're playing for one of the biggest teams in the country, and I think until the end of the season, I'll be happy at Leeds and always will be."

FootballTransfers revealed exclusively in March that Leeds were confident in fighting off interest from Man Utd in Phillips given the historical rivalry between the two clubs, but City may prove tougher to resist.
